Minutes
of the Physics Department
meeting
to be held Thursday September 3, 2009 in UH168.
Present: Boukahil, Constantinescu, Nawash, Rybski, Sahyun
Absent: Benjamin (excused, conference)
I. The meeting was called to order at 5:20 pm.
II. Rybski/Constantinescu moved approval of the August 26 meeting minutes. Minutes were approved with minor edits. Motion passed.
III. Announcements
a. Chair's Announcements
i. UH141 computers. There is a Mac, a PC, and a MacMini that has both OSX and Windows partitions. Please migrate your files to the MacMini this semester.
ii. Syllabi: Benjamin, Nawash, Sahyun are posted.
iii. Please post your Weekly Schedules on your door and give a copy to Lynda.
iv. A letter was sent to the registrar about the lack of a .pdf calendar. The response was to look at the new Events Calendar on the UWW home page and see if that is sufficient for our needs.
b. Committee assignments for 2009-2010 are as follows:
i. L&S Curriculum – Benjamin
ii. Constituency Standards - Boukahil
iii. Library representative – Constantinescu
iv. Graduate Council – Rybski
v. International Education – Sahyun
vi. Disability Concerns – Sahyun
vii. Administrative Council – Sahyun
c. Committee Reports – please submit by email
i. L&S Curriculum met 9/3.
IV. Old Business
a. The Spring 2009 physics schedule was discussed and reviewed.
b. The
old optics cart and TV/VCR cart will be surplused
this next week. Please review excess items in UH50 and Hall cabinets for items
you want to use in your laboratories.
c. Winterim course requests are due to Liz Wednesday,
September 9, 2009. Physics will propose Energy as an on-line course.
V. New Business
a. The new Physics Lab Assistant and Tutor Job Application Form was reviewed.
b. Physics will have the L&S Spotlight in mid-September. Sahyun had an initial meeting with Melissa DiMotto to discuss items for the spotlight. We would also like to emphasize the Kitt Peak connection and remote observing done in PHYSCS 221.
c. There will be a Physics Open House / Welcome Reception for Majors. Tentative date: 3 pm Friday, 18th. Details to be worked on next meeting.
d. D2L has a new “Student” tab for faculty. This tab has information for instructors and a demonstration was given by Sahyun.
e. Rybski/Boukahil moved that, if possible, an historical record of printed syllabi be established from current semester back at least 10 years. Motion tabled until next meeting.
VI. Other announcements.
a. Sahyun attended Learn Center Workshop “Successful Course Design: Online and Hybrid” 8/27 by Steve Boldt.
VII. Boukahil/Constantinescu moved to adjourn at 6:52 pm.
