meeting

III. Announcements

A. Chairπs Announcements

1. Proposals submitted -- Acknowledge submission by Benjamin, Sahyun and

Rybski for ≥Renewal of Undergraduate Physics Program at UW-

Whitewater≤ to NSF-CCLI program

2. Marching in Commencement on December 18^th

3. Upcoming colloquium for Thursday, December 9^th, 4:00 pm, Upham 136E: ≥Risk-informed Safety and Licensing of Yucca Mountain Repository≤, Michael Corradini, UW-Madison

4. Class evaluations: student teaching evaluations; peer evaluation

5. Submit syllabi for inclusion in departmental webpage to Bob Benjamin; Rybski will ask the Provostπs Office to cross-link their entries to our website

6. Reason for inconsistency between Registrarπs Office and Institutional Researcher about count of Majors and Minors has been identified and a solution suggested by Registrar.

7. Learning Communities ≠ The Provost has asked all interested departments to participate in workshops during next semester and during the summer, at their option, to develop residential learning communities. Physics will be represented at least by Rybski.

8. Chair appointment ≠ Rybskiπs current appointment terminates in May 2005; the dean will be asking you to visit him to suggest the next Chair of Physics

B. Committee Reports

1. L&S Curriculum ≠ (Sahyun) Met electronically on Dec. 2; informational

items only

2. Graduate Council -- (Benjamin) No meeting

3. Departmental Library ≠ (Benjamin) Library requests MUST be submitted by the end of January to Benjamin. Extensive discussion of library acquisitions and the need for a departmental library occurred.

4. L&S Promotions ≠ (Rybski) Committee met on November 30^th and will

meet again on December 7^th. Promotions criteria will be discussed during

the next semester.

5. SPS ≠ During the Nov. 29^th meeting, discussion covered outreach activities,

tee-shirts for fund-raising and field trips to Yerkes Observatory,

FermiLab and Ray-O-Vac.

6. Other

a. Chancellorπs Committee on Disabilities ≠ met the Universal Design

Committee on December 3^rd to hear presentations on maximum-access

building designs

C. Announcements from the Floor

1. Thanks extended to Benjamin for arranging for colloquium by Dr. Craig

Heinke, Northwestern University, who lectured on globular star clusters

IV. Old Business

A. Curriculum

1. Benjamin/Constantinescu moved a curricular change to include Exit

Interviews in the graduation requirements for all Physics Major emphases.

Passed unanimously.

2. Benjamin/Sahyun moved that all physics staff/faculty design their ideal

physics/engineering curriculum, for presentation and discussion in a

workshop scheduled for January 2005. Passed unanimously.

V. New Business

A. Sahyun/Rybski moved a Physics 212 curricular change that changes prerequisities.

Chulick/Benjamin move the meeting be adjourned. Meeting adjourned at 3:51 pm.
