Physics Faculty Meeting of November 12th meeting

 

Meeting called to order at 2:42 p.m.

 

I.          Attending:        R. Benjamin, J. Constantinescu, G. Chulick, P. Rybski

            Absent:            S. DasGupta (professional travel), S. Sahyun (illness), L. Fohtung

           

II.        Benjamin/Chulick move approval of Meeting Minutes, with appropriate changes, of November 5th meeting.  Motion passed.

 

III.       Announcements

 

            A.        Chairıs Announcements

 

                        1.         University accreditation meetings ­ A series of Monday noon meetings are being held by the subcommittees responsible for creating the accreditation self-study reports.  The first ­ on mission statements ­ will be held this Monday.

 

                        2.         Peer teaching evaluation requests -- These requests are due to Dr. Rybski by Tuesday, November 23rd at 4:00 p.m. if you choose to have someone from another department give you a peer teaching evaluation

 

                        3.         Student teaching evaluations ­ Arrange with Lynn Miller the dates and times you need her to give Student Teaching Evaluations in your classes.  She will summarize these evaluations and return them to you after grades are submitted in late December.

 

                        4.         Textbook rental forms have been distributed -- These are to be returned to Lynn Miller so that she can deliver them by the deadline established by the bookstore.

 

                        5.         Textbook purchase forms -- These are to be returned to Lynn Miller so that she can deliver them by the deadline established by the bookstore.

 

                        6.         Request for program for Fort Atkinson Science Fair -- We have received a request from the coordinator of the Fort Atkinson Science Fair for a 15-minute, continuously running PowerPoint presentation on recent astrophysical discoveries and possible jobs in astrophysics.  We will have to provide the show, the projector and the computer, so a volunteer will need to carry these items to the fair and remain with them for its duration.

 

                        7.         Major/minor review ­ Benjamin and Rybski are completing a major/minor

                                    review in preparation for submitting an NSF self-study proposal in early

                                    December.

 

                        8.         Chancellorıs review ­ scheduled for 2:00-3:30 p.m.Wednesday November 17th

 

                        9          Dean Jonesı review ­ scheduled for Monday, November 15th at 1:30-2:30  p.m. in the Minnieska Room.

 

                        10.       With the agreement of Upham Building Supervisor Dr. Bruce Eshelman, doors on each floor to South stairwell in Upham Hall are to be kept closed to prevent drafts with dust and exhaust from going up the stairs.  Signs have been placed at each of the entrances.  Should you find a door open, please take the trouble to close it.

 

                        11.       Anything that is damaged in Upham Hall -- such as doors, walls, lights, etc. -- need to be fixed as soon as possible. If you see anything that is damaged, please let Dr. Rybski know so he can ask to have work taken care of. The original metal Upham building cart was damaged by builders, and FP&M are trying to get another one.

 

            B.        Committee Reports

 

                        1.         Curriculum -- No report owing to absence of Sahyun from this meeting

 

                        2.         Graduate Council -- No report because no meeting

 

                        3.         Library-$1,700 is available and must be encumbered by Feb. 1st, 2005. Please get requests to Bob using library request forms by Jan. 21st, but the earlier the better.

 

                        4.         SPS-no meeting

                       

IV.       Old Business

 

            A.        Course rotation realignment ­Extensive discussion ensued about content and purpose of Senior Seminar and in which semester it should be offered. No motions were made, so no votes were taken.

           

V.        New Business

 

            A.        Webpage updating ­ Pat Slane gave a critique of our webpage to Rybski.    Editing will be done by Benjamin, so everyone needs to give their recommendations to Benjamin.

 

            B.        Motion from Benjamin/Constantinescu move the approval of the curricular change to add a Department Exit Interview to the graduation requirements of all Physics major emphases.  Motion tabled pending further information on Submajor specification.

 

Motion to adjourn from Chulick/Constantinescu.  Motion passed on voice vote.  Meeting adjourned at 3:37 p.m.
