Minutes for October 15th meeting

 

I.          Attending:        R. Benjamin,  J. Constantinescu, G. Chulick, S. DasGupta, P. Rybski,

                                     S. Sahyun

 

            Meeting called to order at 2:37 p.m.

           

II.        Sahyun/Benjamin move to approve Minutes of October 1st meeting.  Amendment to approve with minor typing and grammatical changes.  Motion is passed.

 

III.       Announcements

 

            A.        Chairšs Announcements

 

                        1.         Staffing requests

                        2.         Marchers for Winter Commencement-Sahyun, Benjamin and Rybski will march.

                        3.         Physicsmajor-l ownership has been transferred to Bob Benjamin, and he

                                    will moderate the list to minimize unnecessary messages.

                        4.         WAPT meeting in Oshkosh October 29-30th

                        5.         SPS member to visit departmental meetings-Luma Fohtung will be SPS representative.

                        6          On-line scholarship applications and our accounts

                        7.         Advising comments

                        8.         Whošs Who in Among Students in American Universities and Colleges

                        9.         Writing Across the Curriculum meeting with faculty

 

            B.        Committee Reports

 

                        1.         Curriculum ­ No report

                        2.         Graduate Council-cancelled this week

                        3.         SPS-tentative plans to go to Fermilab next week

                        4.         Other

 

C.             Announcements from the Floor

 

1.              Juliana reports on visit of Ayanna Howard.  Dr. Howard will be arriving Sunday, October 31st.

                        2.         Thursday, October 28th Pat Slane will give a talk on neutron stars, since he will be coming to the Science Alliance meeting to be held the following day.

                         

IV.       Old Business

 

            A.        Progress in position transfer request ­ Dr. Boukahilšs transfer to Physics has been

                        approved by the Department of Mathematical and Computer Sciences and by Dean

                        Howard Ross;  the final decision now rests for Provost Richard Telfer

            B.        Summer school planning for S2005 ­ only Descriptive Astronomy will be run

            C.        Course rotation realignment-postponed

            D.        Phase 2B space planning ­ astronomy laboratories to be taught in Observatory; 

                        location of classes remains to be determined

            E.         Colloquium/Outreach Lecture schedule ­ not ready as yet

 

 

V.        New Business

 

            A.        Advising for Spring 2005 (holds, course recommendations, assessment) ­ discussion postponed

            B.        The Self-Study Process- first meeting will be Monday, October 18th

            C.        PRAXIS II analysis-postponed

            D.        Physics Majors Handbook-postponed

 

 

Sahyun/Chulick moved to adjourn at 3:29. Motion passed.
