UWW Physics Department Minutes

of the meeting held Friday September, 17, 2004 in GO313.

            Attending:        R. Benjamin, G. Chulick, P. Rybski, S. Sahyun, L. Miller

            Absent:            J. Constaninescu (excused for professional meeting), S. DasGupta (excused for professional work off-campus.)

 

I.          Meeting called to order at 2:33 pm.

 

II.        Sahyun/Benjamin moved to approve Meeting Minutes of August 25, and September 10 meetings with minor typographical changes. Motion passed.

 

III.       Announcements

 

            A.        Chairıs Announcements

 

1      We welcome Lynn Miller to our meetings.

2      Budget expenditures to date.

3      Expense planning.

4      Capital equipment planning. Sahyun will e-mail a current list to Physics staff and faculty.

5      Renovation Update Phase 2A will be completed between July 1 and August 1, 2005. Phase 2B will begin one month later.

6      Storage Space Survey Update: Informal survey requires many locked storage cabinets. Finish surveys before Friday.

7      Upcoming meeting reminders for students.

8      Undergraduate Research Fund AO. Go to the Undergraduate Research Web site.

 

            B.        Committee Reports

                        1.         Curriculum. There will be an Introduction to Forensics course through Sociology.

                        2.         Science Alliance Planning group met and discussed the alumni who will be coming to campus. There will be four groups: Advancement, Development, Curriculum, and Business. Benjamin will be in charge of the Development group.

 

            C.        Announcements from the Floor

 

IV.       Old Business

 

A.             Class Schedule for Spring 2004 (return proof by Tuesday noon, September 21st)

B.             Status and rules on Departmental Federal Indirect accounts. Benjamin moved, Sahyun seconded, that ³The amount of funds that can be used by a faculty member without department review will be the (Total funds)/(n+1) where n is the number of Tenured or Tenure Track Faculty in the Physics Department.²  Motion passed.

 

V.        New Business

 

            A.        Planning for Upham Renovation Phase 2B

 

                        1.         Shelf space survey

                        2.         Room assignment and room sharing. 

 

            B.        Course rotation realignment

           

D.            Sahyun will discuss feasibility of acquiring multiple user licenses of Mathematica with Math (Arriola).

 

E.             Discussion about the 2004-05 Colloquium Series was postponed.

 

Sahyun/Chulick moved to adjourn at 3:48 pm. Motion passed.
