Minutes
of
the Physics Department meeting held Monday April 7, 2003 in GO313.
Present:

Absent:

I. The meeting was called to order at 2:32 pm.
II. Frandy/Stepanov
moved to approve the minutes of the 3/17 meeting with the change of "Stepanov
at 4 p.m. Monday April
14." Motion
passed.
III. Announcements
A.
Chairís Announcements: Materials for Annual report should be
submitted to Rybski by April 21 as meeting the criteria outlined for May 1st.
B.
The Chancellorís visit is still scheduled for April 14. An
agenda for this meeting will be distributed by Thursday with comments due at 4
pm. Friday.
C.
There is an invitation by department of Biomedical Engineering
for application by students for a design of medical devices conference to be
held April 24 and 25th. All expenses except transportation will be
covered. Applications are due April 14.
D.
Candidate interviews this week: Drs. Misganaw Getaneh on
Wednesday and Ty Prosa on Friday, both will give concept lectures (10 am) and
research presentations (4 pm.) Candidate interviews next week: Drs. Eugene
Stepanov on Monday and Robert Benjamin on Wednesday. Students and faculty are
invited to the research presentations.

University Committees:
1.
College Committee:
Promotions committee: Faculty meeting to decide on changes to the
personnel rules has been delayed until the faculty retreat in August 2003. This
department does not have to modify its promotions criteria until after that
meeting.
2.
Administrative council meeting: Internships, Annual reports,
L&S staff reductions (Physics is being cut by 1 position), Larry Schuetz
reported on Assessments.
3.
Graduate council: Juliana Constantinescu will replace Steven
Sahyun for this weekís meeting.
F.
April 25 we have a NASA Engineer, Don Palac at NASA-Glenn Ohio
is coming to the campus for our Physics Day colloquium. Colloquium is at Upham
134 2:30 p.m. and the Public talk will be in McGraw at 7:00 pm.
IV. Old Business
A.
Goals for next year: submit goals by Thursday 4:30 p.m. so
that we may include them in our discussion with the chancellor.
V. New
Business
A.
Curriculum proposals for 170, 172, and 174 have been handed
out. Submit your comments for review and approval.
B.
It appears that we have lost a faculty position. We will be
requesting that position and one other for next year.
C. The faculty are unanimous in
their opinion that a merger would not be in the best interests of the students,
the department, the state, and the nation.

moved to adjourn at 3:05 pm. Motion passed.
