for the Physics Department meeting

held Monday March 17th, 2003 in GO313.

 

Present:  Virginia Epps, Arriola, Constantinescu, Frandy, Rybski, Sahyun, Stekel, Stepanov

Absent:

 

 I.         The meeting was called to order at 2:21 pm.

  

II.        Stepanov/Frandy moved approval of minutes of the March 10, 2003 meeting with the change of "The physics department has a provisional assessment plan which has been submitted to the assistant dean Larry Schuetz. Further work will need to be done on this plan this Spring and next Fall." under new business. Motion Passed

 

III.       Announcements

a.         Chair's Announcements

           

1.    Reminder of schedule for submission of items for Annual Report. Include papers, workshops,  conferences. Come up with a set of departmental goals on March 31 for a discussion and coordination of goals for final approval on April 7.

2.    Colloquium schedule revision for Spring 2003. Stepanov at 4 p.m. on Monday April 14.

3.    Reminder of Chemical Inventory submission schedule. Note: There is a specific hazard form for each chemical.

           

b.    University, College and Department Committee Reports

 

       1.   Upcoming College Meeting and College Promotion criteria scheduled for April 15.

       2.   Other committee reports

                        i.  Writing across the Curriculum is at the beginning stages.

 

c.     Announcements from the floor

       1.   Vay stopped by and picked up mercury from rooms 133 and 131.

       2.   There have been no positive responses to our requests for Physics Day. Lucy Fortson, Grace Wolf-Chase, and Evalyn Gates, are unable to attend. 


IV.       Old Business

 

a.            College of Education/BSE assessment (Sahyun). New Model Academic Standards for Science Guidelines were reviewed.

 

b.            College of Education PI 34 curriculum implications. Virgina Epps presented information about the PI-34 development levels and the status of the Broadfield programs. We need to consider what we want our programs and standards will be for our students.

 

c.            College of Letters and Sciences assessment. Broad Learning Objectives need to be defined for each course. Need of multiple assessments of material.

 

 

d.            Status of search of a tenure-track General Physics candidate. Information has been e-mailed to all.

 

V.                    New Business

 

a.         None
