Minutes

of the Physics Department meeting held Monday November 4, 2002 in GO313.

Present:  Constantinescu, Frandy, Menningen, Sahyun

Absent:  Arriola, Rybski (traveling), Stepanov

I.        Meeting called to order at 2:28 pm.

II.      Sahyun/Frandy moved to approve the minutes of the 10/28/02 meeting. Motion passed.

III.    Announcements

A.      None this week.

IV.    Old Business

A.     Curricular matters

i.         Discussion of how to alter the intermediate lab course to include computer data acquisition skills is postponed.

B.      An update on confirmed attendees for the department advisory committee on November 16, 2002 is not available in Dr. Rybskiís absence.  This week, letters will be mailed to participants with a map and instructions.  Physics staff attendance:  Constantinescu, Menningen, Rybski, Sahyun.

C.      The advertisements for the tenure track search for fall 2003 are published and applications have begun to arrive.

D.     No update available for the National Physics Day celebration plans April 17 or 24, 2003.

E.      Review plans regarding an equipment auction when the future status of the surplus department is known.

V.      New Business

A.     Discussion of the departmental promotion standards is postponed.  Discussion may also include possible revision of the merit procedures as well.

B.      Evaluation and approval of the purchase of a digital oscilloscope using department service & supply funds postponed.

C.      In our opinion it makes sense to postpone the late drop deadline until after the students have received feedback on their performance.   If the current late drop deadline (end of 5th week) is too early for that to occur, it should be moved back a couple weeks.  The 12th week proposal is too late.  An alternate idea was discussed: eliminate late drops and give students one free drop during their academic career.

D.     The locations of missing items were discussed.

VI.    Constantinescu/Sahyun moved to adjourn 3:05 pm.  Motion passed.
