of the Physics Department meeting held Monday
December
17, 2001 in UH128.
Present: Constantinescu, Menningen, Rybski, Sahyun, Watchorn,
Absent: Tscharnack
I. Meeting called to order at 4:07 p.m.
II. Sahyun/Rybski moved to approve the minutes of the 12/10/01 meeting. Motion passed.
III. Announcements
A. The University Curriculum Committee and the Provost have approved the following curricular proposals: The new course, PHYSCS 150 From Einstein to Star Trek, the revised, 2-credit PHYSCS 489 Physics Senior Seminar, the new major emphasis PHYSICS ENGINEERING EMPHASIS (BA/BS), and the revision of the Industry Track to require COMPSCI 173 Fortran.
B. The Provostís office is looking for a couple of science faculty interested in helping recruit top students by contacting them by telephone in a coordinated session. Lunch will be provided at a strategy session being planned at this time.
C. The University of Michigan announces its Research Experiences for Undergraduates program for summer 2002. The deadline is February 19, 2002.
D. The University of Washington announces its Research Experiences for Undergraduates program for summer 2002. The deadline is March 1, 2002.
E. The University of Tennessee announces its Undergraduate Summer Research Fellowships program for summer 2002. The deadline is March 1, 2002.
F. The University of Minnesota announces its 2002 Summer Undergraduate Research Experiences in Electrical and Computer Engineering. The deadline is February 15, 2002.
G. NASA announces its Summer Institute on Atmospheric and Hydrospheric Sciences designed for undergraduate students. It is a 1 week lecture series followed by 9 weeks of research. The application deadline is February 15, 2002.
H. The Women's Fair is looking for help with staffing tables on March 1, 2002. Please contact Ann Luther if you wish to help.
I. The Learn Center is organizing a workshop on improving student course evaluation instruments and data collection methods. It will be held January 17, 2002. Contact the LEARN center if you are interested.
J. Review of applicants for the two tenure-tack searches commences today. There are about 20 applicants for the math/physics positions and 11 applicants for the physics education position. The search committees will convene shortly.
IV. Old Business
A. Rybski/Constantinescu moved to approve the emeritus resolution for Hugo Tscharnack as modified. After some small changes, an additional phrase was proposed:
“WHEREAS, Dr. Hugo Tscharnack has consistently taught courses richly embellished with creative live demonstrations that were extremely popular among his students; and”
The resolution passed unanimously on a voice vote.
B. Curricular matters were postponed for a subsequent meeting.
V. New Business
A. The schedule for performance evaluations was reviewed.
B. The status of the departmental budget was reviewed and policies regarding expenditures were discussed.
C. The HP LaserJet maintenance contracts were reviewed.
D. The next department meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, January 22, 2002, at 2:15pm in UH134.
VI. Rybski/Watchorn moved to adjourn 4:45 p.m.
