III. Announcements
A. The University of Florida announces its Research Experiences for Undergraduates program for summer 2002. The deadline is February 15, 2002.
B. The American Physical Society announces its 2002-2003 Minority Scholarship. Applicants must be African-American, Hispanic-American, or Native American physics major and be a freshman or a sophomore. Deadline is February 1, 2002.
C. The Indiana University Astronomy department announces its Research Experiences for Undergraduates program for summer 2002. The deadline is February 18, 2002.
D. The University of Alabama announces its summer 2002 Research Experiences for Undergraduates in materials science. The deadline is March 1, 2002.
E. The UW-Madison Astronomy department has made a preliminary announcement of its Research Experinences for Undergraduates program for summer 2002. The deadline is February 15, 2002.
F. Brigham Young University announces its summer 2002 Research Experiences for Undergraduates program. The deadline is February 25, 2002.
G. The Indiana University Cyclotron Facility announces its 2002 Summer Undergraduate Research Program. The deadline is February 15, 2002.
H. Iowa State University announces its 2002 Summer Undergraduate Research Program. The deadline is February 15, 2002.
I. The Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory is offering ten internships for talented undergraduates in its summer 2002 REU program. The deadline is February 12, 2002.
J. NASA announces its 2002 Undergraduate Student Researchers Program (USRP). The deadline is January 25, 2002.
K. Vanderbilt University announces its Undergraduate Summer Research Experiences in Physics. Applications are due by February 15, 2002.
L. The physics department will participate in the Spring 2002 Majors Fair, February 20, 2002, from 11:00am to 2:00pm in the Hamilton Center. If you can help out as a department representative, please contact Dr. Menningen.
M. The Association for the Advancement of Computing in Education announces ED-MEDIA 2002, World Conference on Educational Multimedia,Hypermedia & Telecommunications, June 24-29, 2002, in Denver, CO.
N. The Society of Physics Students announces a national competition for SPS Leadership Scholarships, worth up to $4000 for SPS members in at least their junior year. Applications must be postmarked by February 15.
O. The ASM-Milwaukee Chapter and the Ernie Guenther Memorial Fund Scholarship Committee announce an undergraduate student scholarship. Deadline is April 5, 2002.
P. The 7th annual Networking Breakfast for the Committee on the Status of Women in Physics will be held on Monday, March 18, 2002 in conjuction with the APS March meeting in Indianapolis, IN. Cost is $15.
Q. The College of Letters & Sciences solicits nominations for the 2002 McGraw Student Excellence Award by February 1, 2002. Nominees must be chosen from the August 2001, December 2001, or May 2002 graduating classes and have at least a 3.5 GPA.
R. The department web site has been updated with more extensive information on the major, the new engineering emphasis, and the 3-2 program with UW-Milwaukee. Sample 4 year course plans are included. In addition, the astronomy page has been updated and now includes an interactive Virtual Observatory.
S. Progress on the Upham Hall renovation project continues. The electrical power plan was reviewed on 1/7/02 with faculty. Work is set to begin 6/3/02.
T. The National Science Teachers Association announces its National Convention March 27-30, 2002 in San Diego, CA. Early registration by February 1, 2002.
U. Nominations are now being accepted for the College of Letters & Sciences Awards for Teaching, Research, Service, and Advising. They are due February 8, 2002.

A. Curricular matters
i. Discuss curricular action to require the General Science – Broadfield Physics Emphasis majors to take Senior Seminar.
ii. Discuss computer science prerequisites for PHYSCS 221 and PHYSCS 303.

A. Discuss status of performance evaluations.
