May begins the string of visitors. To start the month, there were a number of schools visits, some historical sites and the Garden of Cosmic Speculation near Dumfries.

Historic Sites

May 1 is a holiday in Scotland, so it is a good time to visit historic sites. Cleo and I visited

• Inchmahome Priory, a 13th century Augustinian monastery set on an island in Lake of Menteith
• Duone Castle, a late 14th century castle that was the setting of Monty Python's Holy Grail
• Castle Campbell, a 15th century castle set high above Dollar Glen

Melrose and Abbotsford

Margot Cameron-Jones and I headed into the Borders to visit Melrose Abbey and Abbotsford, home of the author, Sir Walter Scott.
