UWS-SLEC
Mission
University of Wisconsin System School Library Education
Consortium (UWS-SLEC) is a collaborative venture by five System institutions
(Whitewater, Eau Claire, Madison SLIS, Superior and Oshkosh) designed
to meet the needs of teachers who seek licensure in library media
and information technology, but have limited access to a campus offering
relevant licensures and degrees.
WiLS
Mission
Wisconsin
Library Services (WiLS) provides services for Wisconsin libraries
to support and facilitate resource sharing.
WiLS and UWS-SLEC Demonstration
Project
Library services
for students enrolled in the University of Wisconsin System School
Library Education Consortium (UWS-SLEC) are being provided in a demonstration
project supported by the University of Wisconsin System and WiLS.
The effort is jointly designed by representatives of WiLS, and the
five UWS-SLEC campuses offering courses in school library media and
information technology.
Student Eligibility
Access to library resources to support the study and research
needs of the UWS-SLEC student is critical. This pilot project has
been developed to facilitate access to electronic library resources
provided by the five UW System campuses offering UWS-SLEC courses.
Other appropriate electronic links have also been included. Faculty
and students in the UWS-SLEC are eligible to access the licensed resources
available through this site. Anyone may access the other resources
linked through this page.
Interlibrary Loan
The Interlibrary
Loan Service provides access to Madison campus library collections
to fill requests for materials from state libraries and from libraries
throughout the world. With this demonstration project, WiLS will demonstrate
patron direct delivery of materials through database access and document
delivery.
Funding
The University
of Wisconsin System School Library Education Consortium has been funded
by a PK-16 grant from the University of Wisconsin System and each
of the member institutions. WiLS is a cost-recovery program with income
earned through membership fees and user fees associated with each
program, supplemented by interest income from invested funds, and,
on occasion, by grants for special projects. Indirect financial support
consists of space, utilities, and administrative services provided
by the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Organization &
History
The University of Wisconsin System School Library Education Consortium
grew out of the two-year collaboraton between the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater
and the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire to offer library media
licensure to students beyond reasonable commuting range of a campus.
Assisted by PK-16 funds from the University of Wisconsin System Administration,
the collaboration among the library education faculty has been extended
to include Madison, Superior and Oshkosh. WiLS is organized as a Department
of the General Library System of UW-Madison through a contractual
arrangement between WiLS and UW-Madison. Under this contract, which
is renewed annually, WiLS provides UW-Madison with the funds to support
direct costs of the WiLS operation and is the decision-making body
for WiLS. UW-Madison provides office space in the Memorial Library
and general administrative services. All WiLS staff are employees
of the University. The UWS-SLEC library pages provided represent an
effort to coordinatekey database resources for students in a single
interface.
