Which Route Is for You?

Undergraduate Students

You can earn a minor in either school librarianship or public librarianship by taking eight courses.

To add licensure as a school library media specialist at the 902 Initial level, you must be an education major and need to do two 100 hour practicum experiences which are offered only at the graduate level. These are done after your student teaching and after taking all your library coursework, either before or after you graduate. Until you complete the practicum courses, you are only certified through Middle Childhood (1-6) instead of Middle Childhood-Early Adolescence (1-9) for those seeking that license.

To become certified as a public librarian, class 2 or 3, you must do a 100 hour public library practicum. This is done at the end of all coursework. School library minors may choose to also add this certification with the additional practicum experience.

Students with a Teaching License

For you there are several options.

Should I get a master's degree with licensure?

This question is really up to you and your career goals and financial situation. Some people prefer to get the graduate degree immediately to move up on the salary scale in their job, others prefer to wait, knowing the 902 professional level courses have to be at the graduate level anyway. The UWS-SLEC program offers the courses only at the graduate level.

All licensure courses can be taken outside of the degree context. If you want to get a MSC&I degree, there are two ways to do it -- along with the 902 with stipulations license or with the 902 professional license. At any point, you can switch from undergraduate to graduate level and begin work on a degree. Once you start the degree, you have seven years to complete it. If you start to take graduate courses and want to get the degree, apply to the Graduate Office immediately as you can only transfer in nine graduate credits before acceptance into the master's program.

Option 1: Earn the Master's Degree with the First Level of Licensure

It is possible to simultaneously get the MSC&I and the 902 initial license (if working on another teaching license at the same time) or 902 professional with stipulations license (if you already hold a professional level teaching license). The 902 professional license is then earned after receiving the first level of licensure (i.e., 902 initial or professional with stipulations license) and the master's degree.

Option 2: Earn the First Level of Licensure at the Undergraduate Level and the Professional License with a Master's Degree

The 902 professional license can either be done as part of a master's degree or after the degree. These courses must be done at the graduate level.

It is possible to get the MSC&I and the 902 Professional license at the same time, starting on the license with the two practicum courses from the 902 initial or Professional with Stipulations license. Up to this point, the 902 Initial or Professional with Stipulations courses could be taken at the undergrad level.

Option 3: Earn First License at the Undergraduate Level and the Professional License as a Non-Candidate for Degree

Both licenses can be earned outside of a degree structure. The 902 Initial or Professional with Stipulation licensure courses can be taken at the undergraduate level up to the practicum. The 902 Professional licensure courses must be taken at the graduate level.
