UW-Whitewater Counselor Education Program
In what areas of counseling does your program offer coursework?
The Counselor Education Program at UW-Whitewater offers three areas of emphasis: (1) Community Counseling (2) School Counseling and (3) Higher Education Counseling.
What are the admission criteria?
Academic preparation; 2.75 undergraduate GPA to be in good standing; Ability to communicate effectively; Potential to work with diverse populations; Experience in counseling or related positions; and Demonstrated commitment to the counseling field.
When is your application deadline and when would I start?
To begin summer or fall semester . . . . . . . . application materials due February 1st.
What academic background do I need to apply to the program?
Students admitted to the program have diverse academic backgrounds. Persons who do not have backgrounds in social sciences may need to complete deficiencies early in their program. Those deficiencies will be identified by the advisor during the admissions process and will need to be completed during the first nine credits.
Do I need to take the GRE or MAT?
No, but if you have your results you are welcome to submit them with your application.
How many applications do you receive and how many do you admit?
We receive 110-130 applications per year. Of those, approximately 60 are admitted.
Can I take counseling classes as a special student and then apply to the program?
No. The counselor education courses are restricted to students who have completed the admission process and have been admitted into the program.
Do I have to attend as a full-time student?
No; our students are part-time (3-6 credits/semester) or full-time (9 credits).
Are all classes during the day or are there some evening classes?
Most of the classes during fall and spring semesters are in the evening meeting once a week from 5:30 p.m.-8:00 p.m. Summer classes meet on a variable schedule, most meeting during the day.
Do I have to have teacher certification to pursue school counseling?
No. Students in the School Counseling emphasis who do not have teacher certification will be required to complete two additional courses required by DPI.
After I am admitted, how do I make name/address changes?
All personal information changes (names, addresses, telephone numbers, etc.) are the responsibility of the student. Students are able to make address/telephone number changes via the WINS system. Contact the Registrar’s Office, Records Department at 262-472-1580 if making a name change. Students are asked to advise the department office and their advisor of name/address changes.
What if I already have a Master’s Degree in Counseling?
If you are interested in pursuing additional training (post-Masters), there are three certificate programs available (one in each emphasis area). These certificates build on your earlier learning and are intended to enhance your skills in additional counseling settings.
