PROJECT NAME: Integrating English Language Learners with regular education students.

SUMMARY OF PROJECT:

Our project is to better integrate the bilingual program within our school with the regular education classes.  Since these are two separate programs within our school, the bilingual students are often separated from the non-bilingual students.  We have brainstormed creative ways to bring both programs together in order for students and staff to get to know one another better and to develop a stronger sense of community within our school.

TEAM GOAL:

We determined that our goal was to better integrate the bilingual program within our school with the regular education classes.  This would allow bilingual and non-bilingual students to get to know each other and to develop a greater sense of community within our school.

ACTIONS TAKEN SO FAR:

We further developed the adopt-a-class program with all grade levels, attempted to integrate the students at lunch time, celebrated African American History Month with an Afro-Caribbean dance troupe, as well as with various lessons throughout the month with all grades, integrating the Cinco de Mayo Celebration.

RESULTS:

  • More collaboration with regular education classrooms on doing the themes, activities, and adopt-a-class program.
  • As a school/community, we’ve become more aware of the needs of our diverse learners.

WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE?

  • Continue promoting adopt-a-class
  • Plan for integration of specialists & lunchroom
  • Celebrate all cultures with various activities throughout the year
