PORTFOLIOS
As this
Student Teaching Program Handbook goes to press, College of
Education faculty and staff are actively involved in revising
the assessment system for students, including the implementation
of a new, required portfolio. College of Education faculty
and staff are also working to design an electronic portfolio
system that will be put into place over time. The portfolio
is based on the Wisconsin Teacher Standards (See Appendix
A-1.) and on five central assessment concepts:
·
Communication Skills
·
Human Relations and Professional Dispositions
·
Content Knowledge
·
Pedagogical Knowledge
·
Teaching Practice
The portfolio will be
required at three phases in students' course of study (Pre-Professional
Block, Professional Block, and Student Teaching), and it will
be evaluated based on carefully designed rubrics. A satisfactory
evaluation of the portfolio is required at each phase before
students are permitted to continue in their program.
As of Fall 2002, all
students in the Pre-Professional Block who are enrolled in
Observation and Participation (EDFNDPRC 210) are required
to complete successfully the first part of their portfolio
as a pre-requisite to the Professional Block. Next, these
students will be required to complete successfully the second
part of their portfolio during their Professional ("Methods")
Block as a pre-requisite to student teaching. Finally, during
their full semester of student teaching, these students will
be required to complete successfully the third and final part
of their portfolio.
Additional information
about portfolios will be disseminated to students, university
supervisors, and field supervisors in a timely fashion.
