Students should consult the course catalog, and other formal
University-sponsored resources.
How long will it take me to complete the necessary coursework
to be licensed to teach social studies?
This depends on how much previous college or university coursework
you have taken that satisfies various program requirements
and whether you will enroll part-time or full-time as you are
pursuing your licensure.
In general, course requirements fall into three areas:
1) General Education Requirements (Called PI-34 Requirements) – These
are courses that all licensed teachers in Wisconsin must complete.
2) Content Course Requirements – These are courses in
the social studies areas that you will be licensed to teach.
3) Professional Education Licensure Requirements – These
are the courses that you will take as part of the UW-Whitewater’s
teacher education program.
If you have completed all of your general education and content
area courses, the professional education program can be completed
in three full time semesters (Spring or Summer, Fall, Spring).
Similar coursework from another college or university may
be substituted for equivalent UW-Whitewater courses. Please
consult the University of Wisconsin System Website for course
equivalencies, www.uwsa.edu/tis/. In addition, please refer
to the UW-Whitewater Undergraduate Catalog for course descriptions
to assist you in determining whether your previous coursework
is likely to be equivalent. If a one-to-one match between previous
coursework and a UW-Whitewater requirement is not obvious from
the course number and title listed on your transcripts, please
try to obtain a course catalog description, syllabus, or other
evidence of equivalency and bring this to your advising appointment.
You may download worksheets entitled Discipline/Content
Coursework Self-Evaluation for some of the content areas--Economics, Geography,
Political Science, and Sociology--to help you determine what
courses you will need to take in that content area in order
to be licensed.
Please complete the appropriate Discipline/Content Coursework
Self-Evaluation worksheets to the best of your ability by identifying
coursework that you believe will satisfy UWW major requirements
BEFORE making an advising appointment with a content
area advisor,
because this will significantly expedite the process of evaluating
your transcripts. Bring the worksheets and your transcripts
to your advising appointment for review.
Similarly, if you believe that you have satisfied any of the
education licensure requirements, please complete the Professional
Education Coursework Self-Evaluation to the best of your ability
by identifying coursework that you believe will satisfy UWW
licensure requirements. Please complete this coursework self-evaluation
BEFORE making an advising appointment with the Secondary
Social Studies Program Coordinator. This will significantly expedite
the process of evaluating your transcripts. Bring the worksheets
and your transcripts to all of your advising appointments for
review. In addition, please download and carefully read the
Secondary Social Studies Licensure Program information sheets..
May I enroll part-time?
Yes, but you need to be aware that this is not a night program.
Although some courses may be offered evenings, some of the
required courses are offered only during the day and all
required field placements occur during the day.
If I already have a bachelor’s degree, may I take the
professional education courses as a graduate student and get
a Master’s degree?
No, initial teacher licensure is not offered at the graduate
level at UW-Whitewater; however, two courses have both undergraduate
and graduate listings and may be used as electives in a graduate
program. If you take both undergraduate and graduate courses
in any one semester, you will pay graduate fees for all courses
that semester.
For example, the typical undergraduate enrollment for
the methods block semester is:
