Process

1) Explore the lives of several people that were a part of the Civil War. Find an example of a person that fits into each of the following catagories:

* A Northern general or political leader

*A Southern general or political leader

*A plantation owner or a Northern farmer

* An abolitionist

*A slave

* Family memeber of a young soldier from either the North or the South

As you research the roles you have chosen, consider these questions: What is thier name and family background? What is their livelihood, food, economic status, location, occupation, etc.? You will have a total of six people's lives that you are exploring. Keep track of your findings on this chart.

2) Explore the music of the time and choose at least one piece that would have great meaning to or that would have represented these peoples' lives. Do this for each individual you are researching. Keep track of what you learn on this chart.

3) For each song you find, create a visual representation of it's importance through either art or writing. This will be included in the MEMOIR book that will be a part of the Civil War exhibit. Choose from the following options. Be creative and don'te choose the same one more than twice.

a) Write a poem

b) Create a short story

c) Write a newspaper article

d) Write a letter to a family member or a government official

e) Put pictures to the words of the song, then write a brief paragraph describing why the words and pictures go together and why they are important

f) Create a piece of artwork such as a drawing, painting, collage, etc. Provide an explanation of what you are representing.

g) Come up with your own idea (be sure to get it approved by your teacher first).

4) Get together with other people in your class and create your own MEMOIR book. Do this by representing as many people as you can and the songs that are important to those individuals. Include the lyrics of the song you chose. Have your group share your MEMOIR book with the rest of the class.
