Middle Childhood through Early Adolescence
(approximate ages:  6 – 12 or 13)

The Middle Childhood/Early Adolescence (MC/EA) licensure program leads to licensure in grades
1 – 8/9.  The program includes a Bachelor of Science with an Elementary/Middle Education (BSE) major, an approved minor that may be licensable, and a wide range of professional education courses.  Special emphasis is placed on fieldwork in schools and developing skills to work with children who may vary widely in background and educational need.  To qualify for a license to teach at the middle level, students with an MC/EA emphasis must complete all program courses, in a minor plus any additional licensure requirements for that minor.  Special requirements for certain minors include the following (refer to descriptions of the minors as detailed in the UWW catalog).

Students completing the MC/EA licensure program receive a regular education license from DPI to teach:

  1. Grades 1 – 6
  2. Grades 7 – 8:  all subjects in self-contained elementary school
  3. Grades 7 – 8: language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, health and/or the minor in a departmentalized middle or intermediate school
  4. Grade 9:  minor in departmentalized middle or intermediate school
