Course Description & Objectives

Travel study course for pre-service teachers and other professional majors; participants will work side by side with Jamaicans in the instruction of Jamaican children. Through classroom seminars on campus and in Jamaica, participants will gain knowledge of Jamaica history, politics, culture, education, and economics. Participants will become familiar with the culture and language of Jamaica, understand the impact of European colonialism on Jamaica, plan a variety of instructional strategies to meet the needs of Jamaican learners, evaluate themselves in relation to cross cultural adaptation theories, and connect themselves with others in the global community

Pre-trip readings and written assignments                      30%

Lesson plan for use in Jamaican classroom(s)                20%

Travel journal                                                               25%

Post-trip synthesis paper                                               25%

 

Attendance Policy

Students are permitted two absences.  The third absence will result in a reduction of one letter grade. The fourth absence may result in a failing grade.

            69-76%                       D                                

              0-68%                       F
