The first UW-Whitewater band was started in 1924 under the
direction of Mr. R. C. Clark. This small ensemble constituted the entire
instrumental program. Along with formal concerts, the band performed at various
sporting events. From 1927 - 1939, Sidney Mear directed this organization and
established its place as an important ensemble to this university.

In the fall of 1939, the
marching band was officially established. Since that time there have only been
three seasons that the marching band did not exist. The first was due to the
cancellation of the football season due to World War II during 1943 and 1944.
The second time was in 1971. Our Old Main burned to the ground that year, taking our uniforms with it. Both times
the marching band rose back to be stronger than ever.
Over the years, the Warhawk Marching Band has performed at
16 National Football League games. Wisconsin's Finest has been invited by
the Green Bay Packers in 1961, 1968, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996,
1999, 2002, and 2005. We have also performed for the Chicago Bears in: 1968,
1972, 1973, and 1974. The band also regularly performs at all Warhawk
football games as well as in front of up to 10,000 screaming fans at the
Wisconsin School Music Association Marching Band Championships. We have a strong tradition of excellence, and the Warhawk
Marching Band is proud to be Wisconsin's Finest.
