Situated on the banks of the Yangtze River Delta, Shanghai is the largest city of the People’s Republic of China. Widely regarded as the citadel of China's modern economy, the city also serves as one of the nation's most important cultural, commercial, financial, industrial and communications centers. Shanghai is also one of the world’s busiest ports, and became the largest cargo port in the world in 2005 (Wikipedia).
The 2000 census put the population of Shanghai Municipality to 16.738 million. The city had a GDP per capita of US$7,116 in 2006, ranked no.1 among all 659 Chinese cities. Shanghai has increased its role in finance, banking, and as a major destination for corporate headquarters, fuelling demand for a highly educated and modernized workforce. Shanghai has recorded a double-digit growth for 14 consecutive years since 1992. In 2005, Shanghai's nominal GDP posted an 11.3% growth to 915.4 billion yuan (US$117 billion) (Wikipedia).
Major attractions of Shanghai include the Bund, Xin Tian Di District, Nanjing Road, known as “China’s No.1 Street”, the reconstructed Huaihai Road, Yuyuan Garden, and Pu Dong Financial District. The class will spend four days in Shanghai visiting businesses, universities, and cultural sites during the trip.
