Research:

Mr. Compas studies a variety of land-use policies and practices related to environmental protection, particularly near national parks, utilizing geographic information system (GIS) analysis and qualitative methods. He uses a broad political economic approach to understand land-use decision-making and the way it is reflected in spatial patterns of development and conservation. He has examined subdivision development patterns outside Yellowstone National Park and the role that environmental groups have played in shaping these patterns. In Australia, he has researched the linkage between economic development in the aquaculture industry, coastal second-home development, and creation of new marine protected areas.
