Preregistration

The Art Department allows students to reserve seats in studio courses in the upcoming semester through preregistration. Preregistration is open only to Art majors and minors, and related degree majors and minors, and is prioritized by credit standing, with those students with the most credits preregistering first. Students with art-based scholarships and/or acceptance into the BFA program, are entitled to register first, regardless of their class standing.

Convocation

A convocation is provided for all majors and minors and is generally held before mid-term. At convocation, students are apprised of changes in degrees, course offerings and upcoming deadlines. Students are strongly encouraged to attend convocation, as it is an important planning tool. As such, students must either attend convocation, OR meet with an advisor in order to remove their advising hold.

Advising

After convocation, a two-week period is reserved for advising. Advisors will post sign-up sheets on their doors for scheduling appointments. If you cannot meet during one of these times, you must arrange with the advisor to meet by appointment. You must obtain your advising folder prior to the meeting from the Department Office and bring it with you to your advising meeting. Your advisor will help you to determine what you should be taking the following semester, and help you to plan ahead for future courses. After the meeting, your advisor will sign off on your advising folder, which you must then return to the Department Office for removal of your advising hold.

Preregistration Day

Pre-registration is usually scheduled on a Wednesday, two weeks after convocation, and is held in Room CA 2069. Students must bring their Student ID and the most recent version of their AR to preregistration.

At preregistration, students may sign up for as many as three studio courses, depending on available spaces. Some courses fill up quickly, so be prepared with several alternatives. If seats are not available in a particular studio, a student may appeal for that seat, and if one becomes available, students will be offered seats again based on their credit standing. The maximum number of confirmed seats plus appeals is three. Lecture courses do not require preregistration.

After signing up for classes or filling out appeals, you should also fill out the slips projecting your future needs. These slips are important for the Department to plan future courses, so it is in your best interest to fill them out as carefully and accurately as you can.

Online Registration

Preregistration does NOT automatically register you for the courses you signed up for. You must still enter WINS Registration during your normal registration window and claim the seat you reserved. The deadline for claiming your seat is the end of Priority Registration. If you have not claimed your seat by the end of Priority Registration, you will lose it and it will be offered to someone else. DO NOT hold on to a seat you know you are not going to use. If you have registered for a particular class, and you decide later that you will not be taking it, PLEASE let the office know so they can offer it to someone else.

Unclaimed seats will be offered to people who have submitted appeals in order of priority. If you are contacted by phone and offered a seat, you have 24 hours to claim that seat in WINS before it is offered to someone else.
