Art Education

Initially, there is the College of Education program statement of purpose that describes the thrust of the program to engage students in becoming “REFLECTIVE FACILITATORS”. This description sets the framework for all education graduates from UWW. Secondly, there is the declaration by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction License Program Approval and the Wisconsin Teacher Standards. Together these documents outline the subject matter, cognitive development, skill objectives and dispositions (attitudes) that underlie the program of study that leads to licensure in Art Education (for degree tracks BSE, BA and BFA) at UWW.

The special condition that forms the foundation of these degree tracks is that Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction has until the acceptance of PI34 stated that a significant element of preparation for Art Education should happen in the content area, namely the Art Department. To that end a program of 54 credits has been outlined as appropriate for acquisition of skills knowledge and disposition within the content of studio and art history subject areas.

Below are the listed the course descriptions and objectives for the courses specially designed for developing professional competencies in Art Education. All Art Education students take these courses. These courses are linked with field practicum experiences. Other academic courses that education students are required to take include the PI34 courses in basic knowledge of General Studies. Once admitted into the College of Education other course work that is required includes Secondary Measurement and Evaluation, Literacy Strategies Across the Curriculum and Psychology of the Exceptional Child.
