Degree Track Milestones

As students progress along their degree tracks, certain milestones must be satisfied along the way. It is vital that students are aware of these milestones, and plan for them accordingly.

General Milestones 

English Competency Requirement

All majors within the Department of Art must fulfill this milestone, which can be satisfied either by arrangement in research credits or by taking ENGLISH 274, ENGLISH 370, ENGLISH 372, PHILOSOPHY 271 or an approved substitution.

Exit Interview

All majors within the Department of Art must fulfill this milestone, which can be satisfied by meeting with the chair of the department by appointment during the last half of a student's graduating semester.

BA Milestones 

English Competency Requirement

This milestone can be satisfied either by arrangement in research credits or by taking ENGLISH 274, ENGLISH 370, ENGLISH 372, PHILOSOPHY 271 or an approved substitution.

Application for Senior Show Critique and Senior Show

All BA candidates must apply for their Senior Show Critique and Senior Show during their Junior year of school.

Senior Show Critique

All BA students must present a portfolio of work for faculty review and approval before their Senior Show.

Senior Show

All graduating Seniors must exhibit a portfolio of their work in the BA Show to the satisfaction of the department.

Exit Interview

All majors within the Department of Art must fulfill this milestone, which can be satisfied by meeting with the chair of the department by appointment during the last half of a student's graduating semester.

BFA Milestones 

BFA Entry Review

All potential BFA candidates must apply to participate in the BFA Entry Review at least two weeks prior to the review, and must have satisfied the following requirements:

  • Student must have completed at least 12 credits in studio art, including at least 6 credits in 2-D design and at least 6 credits in 3-D design.


  • Student must have a minimum 2.75 GPA in Art.
Students will either advance to a second review or be asked to repeat the BFA Entry Review in a subsequent semester.

English Competency Requirement

This milestone can be satisfied either by arrangement in research credits or by taking ENGLISH 274, ENGLISH 370, ENGLISH 372, PHILOSOPHY 271 or an approved substitution.

BFA Junior Review

All BFA candidates must apply to participate in the BFA Junior Review at least two weeks prior to the review, and must have satisfied the following requirements:
  • At least two semesters must have elapsed since passing the BFA Entry Review


  • Student must have completed at least 15 additional credits in studio art since passing the BFA Entry Review.


  • Student must have a minimum 3.00 GPA in upper-level Art courses.


  • Students must present a written statement to be posted with their works indicating the focus of interests/directions/intentions, etc., evident in the work to be reviewed.

Application for BFA Exhibition Critique and BFA Exhibition

All BFA candidates must apply for their BFA Exhibition Critique and BFA Exhibition at least one semester after passing the BFA Junior Review during their Junior year of school.

BFA Exhibition Critique

All BFA students must present a portfolio of work for faculty review and approval before their BFA Exhibition.

BFA Exhibition

All graduating Seniors must exhibit a portfolio of their work in the BFA Exhibition to the satisfaction of the department.

All majors within the Department of Art must fulfill this milestone, which can be satisfied by meeting with the chair of the department by appointment during the last half of a student's graduating semester.

Art History Milestones 

English Competency Requirement

This milestone can be satisfied either by arrangement in research credits or by taking ENGLISH 274, ENGLISH 370, ENGLISH 372, PHILOSOPHY 271 or an approved substitution.

Foreign Language Requirement

All Art History majors must complete four semesters of foreign language, including at least three semesters in a single language.

Art History Research

All Art History majors must complete the Art History Research course, which is currently offered as a form of independent study. Students must meet with the faculty member under whom they wish to do their research, and register for independent study under that instructor.

Exit Interview

All majors within the Department of Art must fulfill this milestone, which can be satisfied by meeting with the chair of the department by appointment during the last half of a student's graduating semester.

Art Education Milestones 

English Competency Requirement

This milestone can be satisfied either by arrangement in research credits or by taking ENGLISH 274, ENGLISH 370, ENGLISH 372, PHILOSOPHY 271 or an approved substitution.

Entry to Education Block I

Entry to Education Block I requires a minimum GPA of 2.75 AND students must have passed at least TWO parts of the PPST exam.

Entry to Education Block II

Entry to Education Block II requires admission to the College of Education.

Professional Semester

After completing the Education Blocks, students must spend a semester student teaching.

Exit Interview

All majors within the Department of Art must fulfill this milestone, which can be satisfied by meeting with the chair of the department by appointment during the last half of a student's graduating semester.
