Planning Ahead
Planning ahead is extremely important as students work their way through their college careers. Being aware of issues surrounding registration, advising, course offerings, and degree requirements is vital to insure the quickest time to degree.
Preregistration
The Art Department allows students to reserve seats in studio courses in the upcoming semester through preregistration. Preregistration is open only to Art majors and minors, and is prioritized by credit standing, with those students with the most credits preregistering first.
Advising
Each student is assigned an advisor when they declare an art major or minor. Students are encouraged to visit with their advisor each semester, to insure that they are progressing properly. Advising sign-up sheets are usually posted on advisors' office doors during the two-week advising period leading up to preregistration. Students may also schedule appointments to visit with their advisors at any time during the semester.
Students may also attend one of the specialized convocations. Typically, there will be group advising convocations held during the advising period for the following groups:
- BFA Students
- BSE and Licensure-seeking Students
- Graphic Design Majors
- Any Art-related Minors (including students who are also Art majors)
The schedule for these convocations will be included in the Preregistration announcement letter.
Advising Policies
The following policies MUST be adhered to in order to participate in preregistration:
- Your advising hold must be removed by the department secretary. To do this, you must turn in your Advising Slip at Preregistration. You can obtain an Advising Slip by:
- Meeting with your advisor
- OR
- Attending one of the degree-specific convocations
- Show up on preregistration day! Failure to do so will result in your being unable to preregister for any studio courses for the following semester. If you know you will be unable to attend, you should fill out a proxy form which states your reasons for not attending, and the courses you wish to enroll in in order of importance to you. Faculty members will register for you at the appropriate time based on your credit standing. Proxies may ONLY be used for LEGITIMATE reasons.
- At preregistration, fill out the slip indicating your projected course needs for the next preregistration. Course offerings are determined using these slips, so it is in your best interest to fill them out!
Advising Checksheets
Numerous degree tracks are available within the Department of Art, allowing students to tailor their education to their own individual requirements. Links to checksheets for each of these tracks are provided on the Degrees page.
