CRITERIA FOR EACH SCHOLARSHIP



Scholarship/Award application forms may be picked up in spring and filed in the Theatre/Dance office by the scheduled due date. Awards are presented at the Theatre Banquet.

WYNETT BARNETT THEATRE SCHOLARSHIP
  1. The candidate must have been active in the theatre or dance program and have at least sophomore standing during the school year the award is made.
  2. The recipient must enroll at UW-Whitewater and be active in the theatre or dance program in the year following the award.
  3. The scholarship will be made with no consideration as to the sex of the recipient.


There will normally be given awards each year for:

  1. OUTSTANDING ALL AROUND STUDENT based on his/her participation in all areas of the departmental activities
  2. OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE as evidence by the quality of his/her acting in a variety of roles
  3. OUTSTANDING TECHNICAL ABILITY as evidenced by his/her participation in a variety of technical areas excluding the area of costuming
  4. OUTSTANDING ABILITY IN THE AREA OF COSTUMING as evidenced by his/her work in this area
  5. OUTSTANDING ABILITY IN THE AREA OF DANCE as evidence by his/her performance in this area



THEATRE ALUMNI AWARD
  1. Current freshman who will be continuing at UW-Whitewater
  2. Minimum grade point average of 3.0
  3. Significant participation in activities of the department



MARGO AND SCOTT TRENTADUE SCHOLARSHIP
Awarded to a Theatre major on the basis of excellent scholarship and outstanding performance and/or service in theatre activities


FERO THEATRE MANAGEMENT AWARDS
  1. An award given to a Theatre major/minor involved in Theatre Management/Promotions with a minimum grade point of 2.5
  2. An award given to a Theatre major/minor involved in Theatre Management/Stage management with minimum grade point average of 2.5



MATTHEW SCHLIESMAN SCHOLARSHIP FOR ARTISTIC AND ACADEMIC ACCOMPLISHMENT
  1. Upperclassmen of a junior or senior status during the spring term of application will be considered
  2. In the case of juniors, they must be continuing their program and/or participating with the department the following fall (A non-major who is very active is to be considered) In the case of seniors, consideration will be contingent upon their entrance into a graduate program in Theatre and subsequent enrollment the following fall.
  3. An overall minimum grade point of 3.0 must be met for consideration
  4. On-going significant and valued artistic accomplishments must have been demonstrated in one or more of the following areas: Performance/Directing, Technical and Design, or Theatre Management
  5. Eligible candidates will be evaluated by the standing faculty of the Theatre/Dance Department, with final selection being based upon the highest examples of excellence and achievement during the years of the student’s participation and study in the department
  6. Personal qualities should be taken into account, i.e., the individual’s ability to work with and get along with others, sense of humor, dedication and commitment standards, self-discipline, etc.
  7. As with all awards based on excellence and acheivement, it is conceivable that a year might pass without this scholarship being granted. It is also conceivable that the same person would be the most eligible candidate for two years running, which is to be permitted and encouraged.



KEN LEMPART MEMORIAL AWARD IN DIRECTING            (separate application)
  1. The award will be given annually at the Theatre Banquet to a student who shows promise in directing
  2. The amount of the award will be $100
  3. An application form must be filled out by all candidates.
  4. The person chosen for this award must:
    1. Have directed or assistant directed at least one Theatre production
    2. Show creativity in his/her directing work
    3. Show potential and be a very hard worker
  5. The committee will evaluate and choose the student who they feel is most appropriate for the award based on the criteria listed in 4,6, and 7.
  6. Grade point average should not be a determining factor when awarding this scholarship to a student
  7. This award may be given to a returning student or a graduating senior



CAROLYN AND JOHN BODENSTEINER OUTSTANDING THEATRE SOPHOMORE SCHOLARSHIP
A $200 award to a sophomore Theatre major who has demonstrated outstanding theatrical potential and a commitment to academic excellence with a 3.0 grade point average or above


THE FRED SEDERHOLM THEATRE WRITING AWARD
The award is available to any student registered for a Theatre course for credit during the academic year. Any types of revised or finished writing which represents a student’s best critical and/or creative writing skill will be considered. Examples might include research papers, essays, expository writing, criticism or original creative writing including playwriting. Students may submit materials independently or their work might be recommended by a faculty member.


THEATRE/DANCE DESIGN SCHOLARSHIP
  1. The award will initially be $200, given to one student.
  2. If at some future date the fund grows to an adequate and/or self-sustaining level, the Department, by consensus, may elect to:
    1. Award more than one student
    2. Increase the award amount
    3. The award need not be made every year
  3. The award will be given to a current sophomore, junior or senior (including those planning to graduate) who displays outstanding undergraduate level work in scenic, costume, lighting, sound or properties DESIGN in a realized production on campus
  4. Applicants MUST submit portfolio-type evidence of the design(s) to be considered
  5. A minimum 2.75 GPA (overall) is required
  6. The Department faculty and staff shall select the recipient of the award according to the usual departmental procedures for awarding scholarships.



FANNIE HICKLIN THEATRE EDUCATION AWARD
  1. The award is intended to be given annually, depending upon the availablity of quialified applicants
  2. The applicant must be an upperdivision Theatre Education student (junior/senior standing)
  3. An application form must be submitted
  4. Applicants are expected to be well-rounded in the areas that comprise the Theatre Education major (i.e. performance, technical)
  5. The applicant must have a GPA in Theatre of at least 3.0



GENE AND ANNE WILSON ENDOWED THEATRE SCHOLARSHIP (Separate application)
The amount of the award will be $600.00 per year.

QUALIFICATIONS OF CANDIDATES

The GPA requirement is a 3.25 in Theatre classes and 2.75 overall GPA.

The recipient shall have distinguished himself or herself both academically and by displaying strong potential for a successful career in Theatre. The applicant must have demonstrated substantive work in all aspects of Theatre Department productions.

Preference will be given to Theatre majors entering their senior year with consideration also given to Theatre majors entering their junior year.

Preference will be given to Tech/Design students. If no Tech/Design student qualifies, consideration will be given to all other Theatre majors.

Deadline for applying is April 1 with selection by May1.


COLLEGE OF THE ARTS & COMMUNICATION SCHOLARSHIP
Awarded to continuing students with the highest cumulative GPA who will have sophomore, junior, or senior status the next year. Passed 3/31/94

Award to be given to incoming Freshman for $300.00.


THEATRE FACULTY/STAFF SCHOLARSHIP
Awarded to incoming freshman theatre majors on the basis of talent and scholarship. The money will be awarded to continuing Theatre majors & applied to their second semester tuition.


RICHARD ELKOW MEMORIAL AWARD
Awarded to an incoming freshman Theatre major with a Technical emphasis. The money to be awarded to continuing Theatre majors & applied to their second semester tuition.

To apply for the following scholarships and awards a separate application for each of the organizations is needed.


GENE WILSON PLAYERS SCHOLARSHIP
This award is presented to a University Players member involved in Theatre activities.


THETA ALPHA PHI AWARD
This award is presented to a Theta Alpha Phi member involved in Theatre activities.
