Casting Policy
Main Stage and Summer Productions

(Revised and Approved October 25, 1994)

Theatre/Dance Department Mission:

To train theatre practitioners who are educated and competently trained to work in
the theatre and/or pursue advanced academic and professional work in theatre

To provide cultural growth and enrichment for the University

To provide cultural resources for the region beyond the campus

As partial fulfillment of its mission, the Theatre/Dance Department produces four
productions in Barnett Theatre, a Children's Tour, and Dance concert during the
academic year and three summer productions. Tickets are sold to the public and the work
is viewed by hundreds of people. These productions must demonstrate the highest
quality possible. Therefore, the directors hold open casting sessions. Roles in plays are
open to all students and community residents on a competitive basis. Except in plays
where race itself is an issue, casting is decided on the basis of ability, not race. The
director is responsible for all final decisions and has the freedom to select people who, in
his/her judgement, are strongest for the part.
