Internship Opportunities
Most marketing internships qualify for receiving academic credit. The ones that don’t qualify are typically more general labor jobs – like clerking in a store, working in a warehouse, secretarial tasks in an office. As long as you are performing professional-level activities, such as analyzing a market, planning a strategy, monitoring and evaluating results, your internship will qualify.

Internships are graded on a Satisfactory/No credit basis, meaning they cannot be substituted for a marketing elective course in your degree program. The reason we use the Satisfactory/No credit approach is because marketing is a broad field, and internships vary tremendously in terms of their structure and scope. Some are with small firms where the company owners work with you in a less-structured environment; others are with large firms that have a highly-structured format. We don’t want to restrict your opportunities for internships because they might lack the structure necessary for us to “grade” your performance.

The internship credits are counted as “business electives” on your academic record (AR) and help you get to the 120 total credits needed for graduation. Up to six credits are allowed (3 per semester) and if you’re taking an internship for credit, you must be working in the internship in the semester you register for the credits (i.e., retro-active credits are not allowed).

In marketing, students take internships in addition to their regular course work. Students may be involved with internships part time during the school year or full time during the summer. The number of students doing internships increases each year. Among the companies that have hired marketing interns are:

  • Kraft Foods
  • Great America
  • JCPenney
  • Radio Shack
  • Land’s End
  • Frito Lay
  • Harley Davidson
  • Johnsonville Foods

Student Guidelines
Academic Prerequisites

  • You must have junior standing (completed 60 credits or more).
  • You must have completed Principles of Marketing (MARKETNG 311).

To "find" an internship

  • You may do this on your own
  • You may respond to an opportunity offered by a company (these are posted on the bulletin board outside of the Marketing Department office, Carlson 4019).

Sponsoring Firm Requirements

While firms hire students into what they call "intern" positions, these may not necessarily qualify for credit. For a position to be considered for credit:

  • It must be reviewed by the Internship Coordinator for its educational value.
  • The work experience must be oriented toward a marketing career.
  • The position must have a valid training component.
  • The sponsoring firm must provide a supervisor to evaluate the intern's work.

Internship Credit

  • You can earn up to six internship credits in Marketing (not all at once - max. 3 credits per semester). WINS system defaults at 1 credit so change that, if applicable.
  • Catalog number for "Internship in Marketing" is MARKETNG 492, Sec. 1. The 4-digit class number changes each semester-check appropriate timetable!
  • All internship credits are graded Pass/Fail, therefore they do not substitute for a marketing elective course.
  • Credits are considered "business electives" on your APR and do count toward the 120 credits needed for graduation. Credits can only be given in the semester the internship takes (summer, fall or spring). In other words, retroactive credits are not allowed.

Internship Procedure

  • Contact the internship coordinator, Sharon Roy Newman at 262-472-5470, to discuss internship availabilities.
  • Student must obtain a "Permission Authorization" (pink form) from the Marketing Department office and add the class by the 5th day after classes begin for the term and AFTER the internship has been approved by Ms. Newman. Be sure to indicate on WINS how many credits you are taking the internship for (1, 2 or 3) as the system will default to one credit.
Any internship added after the 5th day of classes will be considered a Late Add. The form for a Late Add must also be obtained from the Marketing Department office (C4019).
